The Desk Edit | Look 01: Styling The Modern Founder
Your brand photos should look like your business. Not like a generic studio, and not like everyone else's.
That's the thinking behind The Desk Edit, a new weekly series at The Studio Co. Each week, we take the same desk in our Central Coast photography and content studio and restyle it for a different kind of business owner, using pieces from our in-house furniture and props library. A different chair, different props, sometimes a different spot in the room. Same desk.
Look 01 is The Modern Founder.

Who this look is for
Founders of design-led, digital and modern businesses: the agency owner, the architect, the brand strategist, the tech founder, the product founder who wants their personal brand to feel as considered as what they sell. The brief we gave ourselves was taste and precision. A desk that says you have high standards and a clear head.
The palette: black, white, chrome and one living green
We kept the palette tight. The desk is dark timber with a curved waterfall edge, so we built around it with white marble, polished chrome and frosted glass, and let one tall bamboo bring in the only colour.
Repeating a small number of materials is what makes a set read as edited and intentional rather than busy. When everything on the desk belongs to the same family, the person sitting at it becomes the focal point, which is exactly what you want from a personal brand shoot.
The props, and why we chose them
The chrome tubular armchair
This is the piece the whole look is built around. A curved chrome frame, a cream leather seat and a cylindrical bolster backrest. Its modernist lines signal a founder who cares about design, and it photographs beautifully from the side, where the curve of the arm catches the light and leads the eye into the desk.
The globe desk lamp
A frosted glass globe on a matte black arm, set on a round white marble base. The soft, round shape balances the hard edges of the desk and chair. Switched on, it adds a warm glow that lifts the scene even in bright window light, and its marble base ties straight into the desk accessories.

The marble desk accessories
A white marble pen cup and a sculptural marble paperclip tray. With the lamp base, that's marble three times on one desk, and that repetition is a simple styling trick: it makes an arrangement look designed rather than collected.
Inside the cup sit white pens, a brass ruler and black scissors, with gold paperclips in the tray. Those small warm-metal notes stop a cool palette from feeling clinical.
Ribbed glass, a black notebook and Avedon
The ribbed smoked-glass tumbler adds texture and a soft grey tone. The black spiral notebook and pen make the desk look worked at, not just looked at.
Underneath is Avedon: Something Personal, the biography of photographer Richard Avedon. It's a quiet signal of taste and culture, and a nod to the studio's photographic roots. On a client shoot, this is exactly where we'd swap in your own book, product or tools so the set tells your story.

The bamboo
Height and life. The tall bamboo balances the vertical line of the lamp, fills the space between the desk and the wall, and gives the frame its one hit of colour. In close-ups, its leaves become a soft foreground layer that adds depth.

How we shot it
We positioned the desk in front of the studio's floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains, which diffuse the window light into a soft, even wash without harsh shadows. The lamp was switched on for warmth.
The wide shot was framed between the drapes to give the image depth and an editorial feel. From there we moved in for details at desk height and a slightly higher angle over the book stack.
For a personal brand session on this set, a good shot list covers a wide of you seated at the desk, a medium shot mid-task or mid-conversation, hands at work with your own tools, a standing shot beside the desk, and a handful of detail shots of your products or materials. That one set can give you a full bank of website, social and press images.
